Brief History of Johannesburg

Johannesburg was established in 1886 when gold was discovered in the region. The city then became the hub for gold and consequently, South Africa’s largest city. Prior to its establishment, Johannesburg was inhabited by hunter-gatherers and Bushmen. Many migrants from all over flocked to the city in search of work opportunities during the mining boom. Immigrants also came from the UK, US and from many countries within Africa.

In fact, the name Johannesburg derives from Christiaan Johannes Joubert and Johannes Rissik, two Dutch men who worked in the field of land surveying. Apparently, they took their shared name ‘Johannes’ and added ‘burg’ to the end to form ‘Johannesburg’.

Furthermore, segregation began in the late 1800s with the South African War and led to forced removal of people in the Johannesburg area and other major cities in South Africa. In 1948 when the NP took control of the state more forced removals were carried out.
